Chaplains

The role of the chaplain at NCYC is as diverse as you would expect when 2000 young people from all over Australia and overseas and a whole heap of adult volunteers gather for a residential week of exploring what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

Predominately the role is to pastorally care for all people who attend and are involved in the convention, and this is primarily done through the establishment of community groups.

Chaplains have a vital role to play in the development and care of each community being asked:

  • To welcome delegates to their community and help them settle in and find a sense of belonging
  • To pastorally care and nurture delegates in their community, sharing with people in times of need and joy
  • To care for and support the community leaders and offer support leadership when needed
  • To be present and available to delegates during times of community gatherings, organised and leisure times.
  • To keep an eye out for emerging pastoral needs in your community.

Alongside community life, Chaplains will be asked:

  • To provide pastoral care when necessary at various parts of the NCYC program for which they will be rostered
  • To talk to and pray with delegates at any appropriate time during the program and particularly during the Evening Program when requested
  • To follow up delegates who have made commitments during the Convention
  • To be strongly committed to operating as a team
  • To refer a delegate to one of the specialist counsellors available if and when necessary
  • To have a servant role, helping out in other areas as required, as long as this does not directly impinge on the chaplaincy role.

The chaplaincy team will consist of people who have a calling to this vital role and the
necessary gifts for pastoral ministry. Chaplains will be approachable team players with an
open receptive attitude.

Assistant Chaplains

NCYC ‘09 is offering opportunities for Assistant Chaplains who will be people with some emerging gifts for pastoral ministry. Their role will be similar to that of the chaplain, but they will spend time with our more experienced chaplains who will mentor and guide them.
